Although there are many people who travel to Baja to simply relax, the number of visitors coming here to enjoy the many recreational opportunities is increasing at an impressive clip.

Water sports are popular, but many land based activities are also on the increase! The great outdoors of Baja provide an invigorating atmosphere for recreation that is hard to match anywhere else in the world!

Two good web sites to review for RVer's who want to tour the Baja Peninsula in an escorted RV caravan include BAJA WINTERS and BAJA AND BACK RV TOURS.

If you know of a company or web site that is not included here we would love to hear from you on our SUBMISSION PAGE.

    BIKES AND MOTORCYCLES

There are few places in the world that are as much fun to put a couple of wheels between your legs than Baja. Whether it's a short bicycle race along the coast, or a 1,000 mile trek down the entire Peninsula on a Harley Fat Boy, biking in Baja is a great experience.

For the t-r-u-l-y insane, how about a balls-out 10 hour, 1,000+ mile mad dash from the border at Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas at the tip. "Can't be done" you say? The CABO 1000 is done in secret each year by a dozen bikers who live fast and crazy. If you ever decide to do this "Baja Cannonball Run", do yourself a favor...bring an extra pair of underwear. You're probably going to need them well before you get to Cabo!

For a great resource on biking through Baja, check out the BAJA GPS GUIDE. The best way to avoid getting lost in Baja!

    BOATING

The Baja Peninsula is the closest thing you're going to find to an island, without being completely surrounded by water! It seems like much of Baja is boating oriented, and this will only increase as it's popularity grows. We will continue to scout out boating information on Baja, and update this directory on a regular basis to help keep you up to date.

Headed for Baja? Check out OCEAN SWELL AND BUOY INFORMATION near the U.S. / Baja border.

    CAMPING AND RV'S

Baja was made for camping! With miles of open space and beautiful coastline, Baja is the perfect place to roll out a sleeping bag or pitch a tent. Your options are endless! Baja offers everything from full service campgrounds with mucho amenities, as well as deserted beaches and mountains where the nearest human being is over 50 miles away. Pick the kind of trip you want, and then narrow down your options.

The climate in Baja is fairly predictable, so it is possible to plan a camping adventure with relative ease. In general, the further south and east you travel in Baja, the warmer the climate. Whereas it might be cool and foggy in San Quintin, on the same day it could be hot and dry in La Paz!

For a brief description of the popular camping areas in Baja, check out the SIX TOURIST AREAS IN BAJA as defined by Baja legend Jack Williams.

For more information on camping in Baja, check out the "CAMPING" section in each of our 24 city categories!

    DIVING

Baja offers world class snorkeling and Scuba diving, and at a variety of skill levels sufficient to please everyone. The visibility ranges from good to excellent most of the time, with only occasional periods of reduced visibility due to plankton blooms or swell surges.

A wetsuit is not generally necessary from June through October, except possibly in northern Baja, and water temperature usually peaks out in September near in the upper 80 degree range at the Cape. Sea life is plentiful along most reef areas, and coral can be found in many areas, including the Cabo Pulmo area of the East Cape.

For a list of dive shops in the Los Cabos area, check out our Cabo San Lucas Recreation pages.

For a good live-aboard boat for northern Baja waters, try the 80' Horizon based in San Diego, California. And for a great live aboard boat for multi-day trips out of Cabo San Lucas, try the 112' Solmar V. There are also 3 live-aboards out of La Paz, the Don Jose, the Marisla II, and the Rio Rita. Check our La Paz section for more info.

    FLYING

For much of Baja's recent history, private planes were a main source of access into the Peninsula. Even today, general aviation plays a significant role in Baja, although the die-hard, seat-of-the-pants bush pilot is becoming increasingly harder to find. Still, many Baja aficionados continue to slip south of the border with their birds, and each flight is a spectacular adventure!

Can you think of a good reason why you shouldn't be flying to Baja in a private plane? BE A PILOT is a web site dedicated towards getting more people interested in flying. Why not you?

Plus, it's always fun to see what's happening at the AIRCRAFT OWNERS AND PILOTS ASSOCIATION!

Whether or not you actually fly to Baja, you gotta check out the new book put out for flying Baja. AIR BAJA is an awesome collection of data, maps and photographs about Baja's airstrips. Gales Hanselman (800-574-9702) spent over three years (and a ton of money!) putting together this ultimate Baja pilots guide. The photos include excellent pictures of each landing strip from a mile or two out, plus great photos of each strip on final approach. These photos alone are worth the price of the package! You can also contact the publisher, Qei Publishing, at Box 1236, Hailey, Idaho, 83333. Fax (208) 788-6308.

For information on obtaining insurance for your bird when flying south of the border, check out the AVEMCO AVIATION INSURANCE web site, or contact MacAfee & Edwards, Inc. at (800) 334-7950 for an immediate phone quote!

And for a cool article of flying in Baja, check out the Spring 1999 edition of PILOT GETAWAYS magazine (1-877-pilotgw). It's loaded with tons of great Baja flying information! For miscellaneous general aviation information check out AVIATION DIRECTORY.COM

Any pilot worth his or her prop wash has heard of Arnold Senterfitt. For almost 40 years Arnold has been the 'King' of flying the Baja, mapping this magnificent peninsula and cataloging its airstrips. Baja Bush Pilots was a natural progression of those early trips, and is a great club to join for pilots interested in flying the wide-open skies of Baja!

WAC charts are on a scale of 1:1,000,000, and WAC chart #CH-22 contains almost all of the Baja peninsula! It's almost as much fun to use when hanger-flying over a cup of coffee back at home!

    GOLFING

Golfing is getting bigger each year in Baja, and the quality of most courses is top cabin. Los Cabos is becoming Mexico's golf haven, and the courses there are nothing short of spectacular! Closer to the U.S border, there are four good golf courses within an hour's drive. For more information on these courses, check out the Baja Expo city directories under Tijuana, Real del Mar, Bajamar, and Ensenada.

If you want a true escape, the golf course in Loreto is a great fly-in destination, and the raw natural beauty of the Loreto area is just the icing on the cake!

    SAILING

Sailing in Baja is spectacular! Whether it's a blue water cruise down the west side of the Peninsula towards waters further south (Costa Rica, anyone?), or a short jaunt in the emerald waters in the Sea of Cortez, Baja offers sailing options to meet needs and skill levels of a broad range of sailors.

Weather can be an issue during the Chubasco season, which generally runs from June through October. But most of these storms only last a few days, and there are several good locations to hole up, if necessary.

When the weather gets good around November 1st the crazy folks from BAJA HAHA get together to head down the coast from San Diego to CABO SAN LUCAS. If you want to sail south with some other fun people this is the group to do it with! After the party in Cabo most of these folks head up the Sea of Cortez or over to the Mexican mainland for more cruising fun. Check out their web site for further information.

Ports with the best supplies and provisions include Cabo San Lucas (for west coast sailing) and La Paz (for Sea of Cortez adventures).

Before heading south be sure to grab MEXICAN BOATING GUIDE by Pat and John Raines as well as CHARLIES CHARTS by Charlie. Both books are an excellent help for sailors heading into Mexican waters.

And for updates on the Nautical Ladder plan and constructive feedback on the project the web site of PRO PENINSULA has more information.

Ready to slip south of the border? Before you head south check out the SWELL DIRECTION AND BUOY REPORTS near the U.S. / Baja border.

For a jib-bag full of information on cruising Baja's waters, don't miss the great web site titled: CRUISE THE SEA OF CORTEZ

And while you're at it, take a gander at these BAJA CRUISING NOTES by sailor Jim Hughes.

And if you are in need of parts for your boat drop by DIRECT MARINE for the easy way to get parts!

      SURFING

Road trips into Baja with the boards strapped to the roof have been popular for decades, and are still a great way to get wet in Baja. More recently there have been a few entrepreneurial spirited gringos who have been putting together fly down surf trips to some of Baja's better point breaks. The costs are reasonable, and the waves are usually very good.

Surf trips to Baja can be arranged through Surf Trip Coordinator at (619) 218-2384.

Taking the boards south to Baja? Check out the SWELL INFORMATION AND BUOY REPORTS near the U.S./ Baja border.

For a great set of articles on surfing Baja, pick up a copy of the 1999 January-February edition of LONGBOARD MAGAZINE. This issue not only has some great surf photography on Baja, but the stories do a great job of putting your mind in the Baja mode.

And of course no surf trip would be complete without a peak at the REEF BRAZIL GIRLS!.

And if you are serious about a Baja surfing adventure check out the web site of BAJA SURF ADVENTURES.

For maps and more information on surfing Baja drop by cool web site of SURF MAPS.COM.

Check out the SAN DIEGO SURF ACADAMY'S web site for surf trips to Baja!

      WHALE WATCHING

Baja is one of the best places on Earth for whale watching! The west coast is famous for it's great pods of migrating California Gray whales, and the Sea of Cortez waters feature the larger resident Finback whales. Most Baja whale watchers set out to see the California Grays, as they are the friendlier of the two, and seem to actually enjoy performing for 'the people with the cameras in the boats'.

Although many Baja travelers enjoy the adventure of driving down the Peninsula Highway to get to the three main lagoons, more people each year are signing up for organized tours for a more predictable approach to whale watching. Either way, it's an unforgettable sight!

For additional information on whale watching, check our city sites under Guerrero Negro and San Ignacio, as well as our EVENT CALENDAR on the Baja Expo home page!

Curious about the California Gray Whale? The GREY WHALE ADVOCATE web site and the AMERICAN CETACEAN SOCIETY website both feature great Gray Whale information!

Check out ROBYN'S GREY WHALE PHOTOS for a closer look at the big guys!
