      SCORE INTERNATIONAL BAJA OFFROAD RACES

If ever there was a place on the planet Earth that was perfect for off-road racing...Baja is the place. Off road vehicles have been sneaking south of the border into Baja for decades to enjoy spectacular off-road conditions. But organized off-road racing has gotten bigger each year, and Score International is the group that puts it all together.

Score International Off Road Racing has been sepecializing in off-road racing in the southwest section of North America for decades. In addition to their annual Baja races, they also organize the Laughlin Desert Challenge, the Henderson Terrible 250 and the Las Vegas 300. These three races draw contestants from all over the United States and other countries.

But it's the Baja races that really get racers fired up. There's nothing like a good off-road race in conjunction with a good south of the border road trip. And score has the options to allow almost anyone who has an interest in getting dirt and grease under their fingernails join in.

The Tecate Score San Felipe 250 is a great race for those who want to get a feel for a Score off-road event. SAN FELIPE is less than 125 miles south of the US border and the town offers decent accommodations for race fans and participants. You might call the Tecate Score San Felipe 250 "Off-road Light", but it's still a very intense race.

For those looking for a bit more of a challenge the Tecate Score Baja 500 has a bit more bite to it. This race starts in ENSENADA, just 75 miles below the border at San Diego. But the race itself covers a lot of coastal and desert terrain, and the pre and post parties in town are half the fun. If you are headed for Hussong's Cantina before or after the race don't expect to find a chair to sit in this weekend.

The grand-daddy of regular Baja races is the Tecate Score Baja 1000. This race starts each year in Ensenada, but takes a different route each year. Sometimes this race loops through the Baja desert and ends up back in Ensenada, other years it heads down the length of the Baja Peninsula and ends in a big fiesta in LA PAZ. A good percentage of the racers never make it to the finish line, but that doesn't seem to stop them from trying again next year.

Score International pulled out all of the stops for the year 2000 Baja 1000. Called the "Baja 2000", this once in a lifetime race started in Ensenada, criss-crossed through some of Baja's worst terrain, and ended up at the tip of Baja in CABO SAN LUCAS. Carlos Fiesta was on a pit crew in SAN JUANICO on this race and the energy running through the Peninsula during those 4 days was extreme. Less than half of the contestants finished the 1,700 mile course under their own power. Even our good buddy Ivan Stewart lost an engine just out of SAN IGNACIO before throwing in the towel.

There are over two dozen race officials that use a specific point system to calculate the placings for each race. It's a tough job, but it makes the races work and the results are rarely challenged.

Score International and their racers depend on their sponsors to keep the off-road race wheels turning. Tecate beer, BF Goodrich, Ford, Coke, Instant Mexico Insurance, Bilstein Shocks, Mc Kenzies, From, Preston, Autolite and others are largely responsible for the fun expereinced at these Baja events.
