Ciudad Insurgentes is located 12 miles north of Ciudad Constitucion on the Baja
Blacktop. This is where the north road from Loreto makes a sharp turn south,
headed for La Paz. The town has a population of approximately 10,000 people,
most of who are involved in agriculture. The main street running through town is
called Benito Juarez, and Pemex gas (station #1709) is on the west side of the street
mid-block (air, water and bathrooms available). The gas station is set up for a one way entrance...slip in from the north. A long distance telephone store (open 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and then from
4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.) is located on the east side of the street. The two decent
sized markets mid-town are Mini Super Baja Sin (east side) and Super Mar Marcado
Market (west side). If you have been on the road in Baja for a long time the
young checkout girls at these markets look pretty cute! Hungry or want to take
some food on the road to go? El Pollo Real is located on the east side of the street
near the statues in the middle of the road at Avenida Hidalgo. The Drug Inspection
station about 6 miles north of town is now closed.
Baja travelers looking fora quick bite to eat will find plenty of easy parking and good food at La California Restaurant, located just east of town on the north side of Baja Highway One. It is well lit with big windows and has a half dozen tables inside. The restaurant also offers a small store with sodas and snacks, plus bathrooms. The local phone number for the local hospital is 2-0104. For more information on the area north of Ciudad Insurgentes check out the SAN JUANICO section of Baja Expo.
YOUR FIRST STOP IN TOWNIf you are headed north from Cuidad Insurgentes to La Parisima, San Juanico or Laguna Ignacio this is probably the best place to get gas. The Pemex station is on the west side of the street, mid town. It also has an air station for filling your tires....and bathrooms!
THE GRINGO FACTORLike it's larger brother Ciudad Constitucion 5 miles south, Ciudad Insurgentes is not a tourist town. Gringos are more prevalent during the whale watching season from January through March, and during the summer months as they head north to San Juanico. But the main Gringo roll of Ciudad Insurgenetes is gasoline, and a place to grab food and drinks for the drive north. THE BEST OF CIUDAD INSURGENTESHand's down the best open-spit chicken within a hundred miles is the Pollo Real on the east side of the street, across from the Pemex station. Try the "Pollo Entero"...that the whole bird with tortillas, freedom fries and a plastic bag of delicious salsa. Throw in a cold cervesa and you have died and gone to heaven!
CARLOS FIESTA'S HOT TIP:One of the best places in the world to go whale watching is just 30 minutes west of Ciudad Insurgentes in Puerto Morelos. The whales hang out here from January through March to play, mate, and watch the tourists watch them. It's an amazing thing to experience, especially in the heat of the season in mid-February. Bring a camera! For more information visit the WHALE WATCHING section of Baja Expo.
