      BAJA'S MAIN TOURIST ZONES

Making the decision to go to Baja is easy. Making the decision where to go in Baja is a whole different can of cactus apples. When you have a peninsula almost a thousand miles long with over 2,000 miles of coastline, it makes sense to have a good vacation plan before heading south.

One of the reasons that it is a good idea to be aware of Baja's different Tourist Zones is because it's a great way to see more of Baja on any given trip. Tourist Zones tend to be areas where there is more than one destination in proximity to another.

Just to clarify the issue, steering Baja travelers to the Tourist Zones is not the purpose of this article. On the contrary, some of the best destinations that Baja has to offer are not located in or near the major Tourist Zones.

But the reality is that, as travelers, most of us are limited as to the amount of time and resources we can dedicate to any given adventure south of the border. So being aware that certain areas offer multiple points of interest is a good idea.

The Tourist Zones listed below are simply general suggestions by Carlos Fiesta, there are no government-established zones here. But these areas do tend to offer more punch for your peso that most one-stop destinations in Baja.

For reference check out this MAP OF BAJA by Cabo Bob.

      • TIJUANA TO ENSENADA

Major destinations in this zone include: Tijuana, Rosarito Beach, and Ensenada.

Minor destinations in this zone include: Real del Mar, Fox Studios Baja, Calafia, Puerto Nuevo, Baja Mar and Punta Banda.

        All on paved roads.

Without question the stretch of Baja from Tijuana to Ensenada is the most popular Tourist Zone in Baja. The fact that the US/Mexico border at Tijuana is the busiest border in the world may have something to do with the exceptional number of tourists who visit this area each year.

Some of the highlights in this Tourist Zone include walking Revolution Avenue in Tijuana, partying in Rosarito Beach, eating lobster in Puerto Nuevo, sampling seafood in Calafia, golfing in Real del Mar and Baja Mar, and shopping-eating-drinking in Ensenada.

      • SAN FELIPE TO GONZAGA BAY

Major destinations in this zone include: San Felipe, Puertecitos and Gonzaga Bay.

Minor destinations in the zone include: San Felipe's northern and southern campos, the Enchanted Islands, and Coco's Corner.

        Paved roads to Puertecitos.

This coastal stretch of Baja should have the title "The further south you go the better it gets". For those who aren't afraid of going off-road, this route can be a great "loop" trip, ending up at the south end on Baja's Highway One to head north again.

Some of the highlights in this Tourist Zone include shopping-eating-drinking in San Felipe, the natural hot springs in Puertecitos, kayaking in Gonzaga Bay, and hoisting a cold cervesa with Coco at Coco's Corner.

For additional things to do in each of the above areas drop by the directories for each area on the home page of Baja Expo.

      • SAN IGNACIO TO LORETO

        All on paved roads.

There are no more beautiful views to be found in Baja than along Highway One between San Ignacio and Puerto Escondido. With volcanoes, empty beaches, deserted islands and sky-high mountains, this stretch of the Peninsula offers the postcard-perfect views that make Baja one of the most beautiful destinations in the world.

Some of the highlights in this Tourist Zone include viewing the mission and town square at San Ignacio, exploring the river road in Mulege, walking the streets of downtown Loreto, snorkeling the reefs of Isla del Carmen, and hiking Steinbeck Canyon west of Puerto Escondido.

For additional things to do in each of the above areas drop by the directories for each area on the home page of Baja Expo.

This is the Tropics! Excellent weather all year long, some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet, warm ocean waters, and sea life like nowhere else.

Some of the highlights in this Tourist Zone include the empty beaches south of Buena Vista, excellent snorkeling at Cabo Pulmo, shopping in San Jose del Cabo, eating-drinking-partying-fishing-etc in Cabo, cruising the art galleries in Todos Santos.
